Ruth Beckermann: In Praise of Detours
Conversation and Film Clips
December 3, 2025
The author and director Ruth Beckermann stands for an examination of history oriented around the precise observation of contemporary constellations. Again and again, her films deal with the ways the one flares up in the other. For instance, in her preoccupation with Austria, Judaism, and questions about personal and collective identity, as well as their ruptures. She is therefore suspicious of both closed forms of narration and linear views of history.
All of Beckermann's films are now available on DVD. This evening at the Film Museum offers the unique opportunity to see and discuss never-before published material from her production process: interviews, filmic miniatures, and interventions as well as the documentary accompaniment to the creation of individual works. (Michael Loebenstein / Translation: Ted Fendt)
