Films for Lisette Model

December 15, 2025

Born in Vienna as Elise Amelie Felicie Stern, Lisette Model (1901–1983) is one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century. In parallel to the retrospective exhibition of her most important groups of work at the Albertina (on view until February 22, 2026), we present in a collaboration three related short film masterpieces. Jean Vigo's À propos de Nice is a sarcastic settling of accounts with the worldly luxury life on the Riviera to which Model dedicated an ironic photo series. In the Street is an unsurpassed document of raw life in New York analogous to Model's portraits of poverty on the Lower East Side. And Jazz Dance thrillingly captures the mood at a concert in Manhattan – corresponding to Model's wonderful jazz photos of the era. (Christoph Huber / Translation: Ted Fendt)
