Throughout his career, Khavn has drawn inspiration from the margins of society of his hometown Manila, expressing respect, solidarity, and admiration through his unflinching depictions of life in the underbelly. Mondomanila represents one of his wildest trips to the ghetto: we follow the life of rough street kid Tony de Guzman and his colorful collection of friends, relatives, and enemies, all struggling to survive at least for another day in the hostile environment hell-bent to devour them. Khavn: "Do something completely different. That bottomless pit called hypothesis. What if I make a Manila film, like Brocka and Bernal? What if you transform the novel into a 3-hour Bollywood bonanza? What if you turn it into a 32-part series?" (J.M.)
