Cosma Grosser's Matter in Place kicks off the program with an examination of film as composition of matter and place – not unlike the molding of stone, recomposing time and space through the shaping of material and surface. From material structure to family structure: Two subsequent films tackle the complexities of family relations. Christina Stuhlberger's Saying Not Said portrays two mother-daughter relationships, two exchanges across languages and generations. A snapshot of four women at different moments in their lives, of language as a legacy either transmitted or omitted. Dora Maurer's Hetproba is an intimate portrayal of Eszter Póka, an opera singer and single mother, and her four teenage children. Each family member responds to a series of challenges with their own musings and mannerisms. As footage of each member is dissected, repeated, reframed, and multiplied, their connections and differences are accentuated, recomposed into a polygonal family portrait. (S.D.)
