An octet from Jarman's first half‑decade of filmmaking, mapping a crucial formative stage as he shifted the emphasis of his praxis toward cinema. Not that these works were made for big‑screen exposure. They are private pieces crafted for (and by) Jarman and his circle, ecstatic explorations of the Super‑8 medium. They casually immortalize the chaotic London spaces where Jarman lived and worked (Studio Bankside; Sloane Square: A Room of One's Own), a spooky expedition to rural megaliths (A Journey to Avebury) and even a sun‑kissed sojourn on Fire Island, off New York (My Very Beautiful Movie). But they also encapsulate Jarman's lifelong fascination with magic(k), alchemy, esoterica, and transgression. Together they comprise a portrait of the artist as a young(ish) man, working through his influences – Jack Smith, Anger, Deren, Mekas, Cocteau, Brakhage – to discover and refine his own exquisite voice and vision.
