The Shape of Films to Come Film (1968) and Lecture by Timothy Druckrey

October 10, 2013

On the eve of the 2013 Kontraste Festival in Krems, which will unveil an exciting project called Vertical Cinema (organized in collaboration with the Austrian Film Museum), we are looking at the "futures" of cinema and film projection as articulated in earlier decades. The New York-based theorist, curator and cultural researcher Timothy Druckrey, whose publications on media culture and its social dimensions have set a standard for the field, will present a lecture focusing on the 1950s and 60s: Driven by enormous technological advances and a proliferating media culture, the traditional film frame could no longer contain all the visual and experiential dimensions demanded by a sensation-seeking “generation of the spectacle.” The result was a multitude of new ideas for an Expanded Cinema. The centerpiece of the talk is the presentation of a newly restored film, The Shape of Things to Come (1968), which covers various "expanded" forms of cinema as presented at Expo 67 in Montreal.
