In Cauleen Smith's Pilgrim (2017), three locations – Alice Coltrane's ashram, Simon Rodia's Watts Tower and Black spiritual activist Rebecca Cox Jackson's Watervliet Shaker Historic District – and a live recording of Alice Coltrane's One for the Father form the starting point for a cinematic exploration of places that were and are dedicated to creativity and fulfillment. Although diametrically opposed to a logic of flourishing, in Miryam Charles' Cette maison (2022), a place, or more precisely a house, is also at the center of the plot and along with it the stories of its inhabitants. Tessa, a murdered teenager, speaks to her mother and to us, the viewers. And she shares her thoughts about migration, wishes and hopes, in addition to a present in which the atrocities of the past are imprinted. (B.K.-K.)
