Famously filmed in a single day, Squatterpunk shows us the harsh, brutal, and yet in some way tender reality of daily life in Tondo, one of Manila's slums also known as the garbage citadel of Manila. We follow an eight-year-old Slum King as he strolls around the “literal rectum of the metropolis” (Oggs Cruz), swims in rotten garbage and plays with other kids who were born under the same "lucky" star.  Strangely beautiful monochromatic images pulsate in the rhythm of the improvised score by Khavn's band The Brockas (occasionally featuring Lav Diaz on guitar), together forming a proper punk symphony of a city. Khavn: "Day in a life. Death in a day. Free mohawk. Japon & the gang. The sea is not dirty, you see. Videoke music for the soul. Poverty as punk. The Fig Rig never flew. All you need are three chords & the truth." (J.M.)
