Bruce McClure
Projector Performances

March 26 and 27, 2008

New York-based artist Bruce McClure, who was trained as an architect, inaugurated his Projector Performances in 1994 and has been a cherished guest in museums and at festivals ever since. McClure "plays" his projectors as if they were instruments of light and sound. As many as four 16mm projectors produce a three-dimensional depth of abstract forms; each performance is unique and contingent on the conditions of the given space.

The complex technical requirements for these "moving sculptures of light" are in brilliant contrast to the rough surfaces of the forms and the music: driving beats which McClure himself devises from soundboards of his own construction. The films he uses are produced without a camera; sometimes the blank film strips are coloured with ink or paint. Out of minimal audio-visual information he creates hypnotic, synaesthetic cinema experiences.

On the occasion of this joint programme of the Austrian Film Museum and Sixpack Film, Bruce McClure and his work can be seen for the first time in Austria.
