Over five consecutive days in January 1978, P. Adams Sitney (*1944) the apostle of New American Cinema and co-founder of New York's Anthology Film Archives together with kindred spirits Jerome Hill, Peter Kubelka, Stan Brakhage and Jonas Mekas held a series of lectures at the Film Museum under the collective title of "The Uniqueness of the Cinematic." In this extract from the inaugural lecture, Sitney outlines his "central enterprise" and establishes the five main topics that he would explore in the course of the series.
