To open the retrospective dedicated to the work of Soviet master filmmaker Aleksandr Dovženko (*1894; †1956) on March 10, 1976, the Film Museum invited his widow, actress-director Julija Solnceva (*1901; †1989), to Vienna. In this extract from her introduction to Dovženko's classic Zemlja (1930), Solnceva describes the Ukrainian-born director's work with non-professional actors, which influenced later generations of filmmakers such as the Italian neorealists.
