Empress Elisabeth is still ever-present in Austria (and beyond) through powerful representations in the media. It is nearly impossible to take an objective look at her. Aware of the power of this traditional imagery, Corsage does not go for "historical accuracy," but instead reflects on the pitfalls of apparent authenticity. Marie Kreutzer's direction and Vicky Krieps' performance produce a picture that never quite fits together into a consistent whole and in which inexplicable traces are always left behind which make this film so sumptuous.
