Lecture
Larger Than Life
Hollywood's Star System
For over 100 years, they have been the commercial backbone of the film industry and it is hard to imagine a world without them: Stars. They are at once a source of revenue for film studios and act as projection screens for society's desires. This lecture will approach them from a variety of angles, discussing the history of the Hollywood star system, defining what makes a star a star, and determining how a star's presence shapes a film's form.
