Fritz Lang (DE 1931)
"Murderers among us": Fritz Lang is turning a tabloid story about a child murderer into a panoramic view of his time and society (from which he had to flee only a few years later). The faceless threat of the child murderer is setting mechanisms in motion that give a feeling of the things to come. Everybody is under suspicion, defamation is common, police is everywhere, the mob is anxious its business model is going to crumble. M is all of that and more: an expressive filmic work of art that visualizes social structures and is visionary in the use of the then young invention of synchroniced sound as a tool of art and storytelling.
The screening (D: Fritz Lang, 109 min) in original german language will be followed by a 60-minute analysis of chosen sequences.
