With an analogue Super 8 camera, Helga Fanderl gives her full attention to people, friendships, animals, works of architecture and social interactions, transforming these encounters into a deeply cinematic form. Altered sections of the image, repetitions, changing frame rates, calm shots or rapid flicker – the artist uses the possibilities offered by a movie camera to shape and give rhythm to her encounters in the moment of filming. This allows her to create a specific form of presence, which conveys the beauty and momentousness of our existence as humans and our emotional connection to the outside world. Working patiently for decades, Fanderl has created a filmic oeuvre whose tender and sensitive preciseness produces an unrivalled cinematic experience.
For this filmmaker-in-focus program at the Austrian Film Museum, Fanderl has assembled two programs, which she will project herself on Super 8 and 16mm projectors in the cinema and she will also speak about her filmmaking. She will present her recently published monograph, an artist's book that translates her work into book form, and she will lead a workshop at the Friedl Kubelka School for Independent Film.
