Internationaler Holocaust-Gedenktag

Since 2008, we have been examining the visual history of the Holocaust in collaboration with Vienna's Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Digital History and many international partner institutions. Our focus is on the question of how moving images and stories explore the singularity of the genocide of the European Jews.
To mark this year's International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust (January 27, 2024), we will show Claude Lanzmann's 2001 masterpiece. Starting from an interview he shot in Israel in 1979 with Yehuda Lerner, a survivor and resistor from Sobibor extermination camp, Lanzmann shows the re-appropriation of human agency and violence by Jewish prisoners. Lanzmann: "We need to correct the legend that claims that the Jews let themselves be led unknowingly into the gas chambers and their death was 'docile' or that they did not resist their executioners.
